What is fashion?

I walked through the stylish suburbs or Prahran, Toorak and South Yarra (in Melbourne) today, looking in all the beautiful windows. My heart started to sing as I imagined myself in that jacket, with those shoes, in that restaurant. I started to wonder…what is fashion?

From a personal branding perspective – fashion is your paintbrush, your typewriter and your stage. What you wear can tell people who you are, what you value and who you might be. People will take one look and want to know you – what makes you tick?

This is why it is so important to wear what you love, what you are comfortable in and to not listen to any other person. I feel very sad when I wander through privileged suburbs (from Paris to London to Sydney) and see a ubiquitous uniform of people trying to project ‘success’.

The same colour and style of hair, the same ‘must have’ leisure wear, eating at the same restaurants and slavishly following the ‘must have’ lists concocted by savvy marketers playing on insecurity. There is nothing special about fitting in. There is nothing smart about denying who you are to be what you think the world wants you to be. That always ends badly.

When you follow what other people tell you, you miss the opportunity to be yourself, to show others who you are and what you can be. Fashion is fun and oh so fulfilling. You know how you feel when you are in the costume that is right for you? Everyone else notices you too. It is up to you to tell the story so wear what you want and show the world what you can do!
