Power dressing was a term coined in the 1980’s – the Reagan years. It was an era dominated by success and materialism. In reality there has always been power dressing. Regal robes and crown jewels, barristers wigs and robes, military uniforms have always been about power dressing. The concept is simple – dress appropriately for the job you want.
Conservative work requires conservative dress. A creative worker should look at least a little creative.
BNY’s advice?
Dress for the job you want in five years. We look at people like IBM’s Ginni Rometty, who has maintained the same groomed look and style for more than 20 years. She conveys trust and authority. Looking like you can do the job that you are trying for is a great way to demonstrate potential and it is this that employers and leaders are looking for.
