We all start the new year with ideas of what we will do differently.  As work starts to get busier, some of these great ideas just fly out of the window along with late starts, the daily gym visit and the plans to stay off the alcohol!

This is where Brand New You can help.  We recently read some career advice that was put together by teachers at Stanford Business School.  Here’s their tips with our thoughts wrapped around to start you off:

  1. Successful people listen – we love to say at Brand New You that you have 2 ears and one mouth!  Having presence is as much about how engaged you are with the person who is speaking as it is about how you speak and what you say.
  2. Follow the 80/20 rule – most of the value is delivered by that 20%, so find it.  In people, products or services.
  3. Be passionate – we talk about passion to all of our clients.  Especially our school students.  Passion for anything is unbelievably appealing.  It is passion itself that is attractive – never what you are passionate about.  Apparently, the great man himself, Warren Buffet, looks for someone who would do the job whether they got paid or not!
  4. Be likeable – we work with clients all the time on defining what being likeable means.  People like to work with people that they like.  People buy from people who they like.
  5. Put on the ‘cloak’ of leadership – as we always say here at BNY, dress for the role that you want to be doing in 5 years.  Take control – be a leader and you will be made a leader.
